From the Marlborough Downs in Wiltshire was making my way to the Blackdown hills. On the way stopped off at a location in Somerset known as Cadbury castle or hillfort.
Cadbury Magnificent Views
Cadbury hillfort is located near Yeovil in south Cadbury on the southern edge of the Somerset levels, steep in the legends of King Arthur. There is a small free carpark at the foot of the hill but it is easily missed. Its a small but steep walk to the summit but with magnificent views all around the Somerset countryside.
For a change we had some afternoon sunshine, blue skies and white fluffy clouds. Its a good walk around the ramparts of Cadbury hillfort.
Many Compositions
In such light during winter there were many compositions. Sometimes this can be a problem as you start shooting at anything and everything. Its important to slow down and attempt to identify just the best compositions.
With these type of compositions it can be difficult to keep interest in the bottom third of the frame. Often they can be filled with just grass as your eye skips over them to the interest in the top third or two thirds of the frame.
It was one of those beautiful February afternoon on top of Cadbury hill in Somerset. Its a beautiful little area, could of stayed here a few days rather than a few hours. Some more distinctive hills in the immediate vicinity within walking distance is Parrock Hill and behind the Beacon.
The low angle of the sun due to late afternoon and winter was lighting up the bare trees and contours of the land beautifully. Had it been overcast may not have been so impressed with the location.
Spring is Coming
On the return to the carpark found a lovely patch of snowdrops on the hillside. A sure sign that spring is not too far around the corner.
These hillforts are dotted all over the counties of Wiltshire, Somerset and Devon. They often contain some ancient woodland and magnificent views, I would be visiting a few more during the journey west.
