Hampshire South Downs Beacon Hill

Living in east Dorset I was not far from the border of Hampshire.  The south downs in the south east of England is one of my favourite places to walk and take landscape photos.  Today was going to be my first venture into the Hampshire part of the South Downs starting at Beacon Hill and making my way to Old Winchester Hill.

Deal Hythe and Sandgate Kent

It looked like I had picked the wrong week to do a road trip.  My last few days in Folkestone Kent and it was very wet and windy with a few breaks of sunshine through the clouds.  What follows is a few shots I got from around Deal, Hythe and Sandgate on the Kent coast.

Elham Valley Kent

One good thing with being on a road trip, staying in a hotel, you are more motivated to get outside rain or shine.  The rain and clouds had returned with a vengeance, after a break of one day along the north downs.  Based in Folkestone,  I decided to take a trip inland to the Elham Valley.

Folkestone North Downs Way

When in Folkestone, you can’t help notice the surrounding backdrop of the North downs hills.  There was a break in the gloomy winter weather, it was going to be a sunny day, blues skies and a gentle breeze.  I was heading up those hills of the North Downs Way.

The Warren Folkestone Kent

I began my roadtrip in the south east of the UK at Folkestone in Kent.  I have friends living there I could visit and the hotels were cheap.   Folkestone is also good for walks and landscape photography with some dramatic coastline heading to the Warren and the Kent and North downs as a great backdrop.

Friston Forest White Horse View

Although I had covered most of the South Downs in East Sussex over the last year, there were still pockets left undiscovered.  I also realised this late in the day I not have a good landscape photo of the White Horse on high and over.  That was where I was heading via hiking through Friston forest.

Crane Down Folkington Hill East Sussex

The forecast was a cloudy Saturday morning but needed to get out for a good walk and not too far away.  My initial plan was a walk from Wilmington over Crane Down and then onto Friston forest.

Wolstonbury Hill South Downs West Sussex

While ascending Ditchling beacon on the south downs I noticed the outline of Wolstonbury hill on the border in West Sussex.  I knew then I would return to walk to its summit and take some landscape photographs from there.

Full Moon Ditchling South Downs

It was that time of the month when the moon would rise on the south east horizon close to the sun setting in the north west, at  least over the weekend.  I would head back to the south downs for an evening walk to capture the moon and the sun but where?

Boxley North Downs Kent

I had selected a few locations within Kent that looked interesting from a landscape photography and walking perspective.  With a description of steep escarpments of the north downs and glorious views over Kent, Boxley was next on my hit list.

Brenchley High Weald Kent

I was running out of new places to visit in east Sussex, so this weekend I decided to push further afield in Kent.   I chose to visit the countryside around the village of Brenchley on the edge of high weald.

Burwash Common High Weald

From the OS Maps online I liked the look of the countryside around Burwash common on the high weald in east Sussex.  Lots of contours, perhaps good viewpoints for some landscape photography and a walk.
