My photos on Google Maps have just gone over the 5 million views threshold. What follows is the ten most viewed photos on Google Maps.
Some time back did a similar review when my photos on google maps passed the 2 million views threshold. So will be interesting to see if any photos from then are still in the top ten.
1. Cuckmere Haven Coastguard Cottages
Storming in at number 1 and a new entry with over 650,000 views is sunrise photo of the coastguard cottages at Cuckmere Haven with the magnificent cliffs of the seven sisters in the background. It was less than 6 months ago visited Cuckmere Haven. So this photo is doing extremely well on Google maps.
Usually at popular locations like Cuckmere Haven your photos dont do so well as they are competing with so many others. With sunrise though not so many people and it catches the eye. This was shot with my DLSR and uploaded to Google Photos rather than a mobile phone snapshot.
2. The Sussex Ox, South Downs
Another new entry coming in at number 2 with over 357,000 views is a mobile phone snap of the Sussex Ox pub at the foot of the south downs in East Sussex. So not an actual landscape photo but I remember the hot July day in the summer of 2020 had been exploring Berwick in East Sussex.
What was memorable about that day was not long come out of Covid lockdown. The pint I had at the Ox in Sussex was the first since lockdown, in that the pubs had only just reopened. This goes to show that some pretty insignificant photos snapped on a mobile phone can get a significant number of views on google maps. So why so popular? I’m guessing its due to the pub being hidden away and not much competition.
3. Barley High Street
Dropping one place with just under 125,000 views is another mobile phone snap of Barley High Street in Hertfordshire. This came in at number 2 when clocked up 2 million views on google maps.
Nothing new to say about this, another insignificant snap with a significant number of views. Other than it was the day I captured one of my favourite Hertfordshire countryside landscape photos back in June 2019. My composition skills have improved since then and looking at this photo now could do with a rule of thirds crop on either the sky or the poppy in the foreground.
4. Bayham Old Abbey
Bayham old abbey came in at number 1 when clocked up 2 million views on Google maps. Dropping to number 4 with over 124,000 views.
Have been meaning to revisit Bayham old abbey as makes a great subject to photograph. Have turned up at the entrance a few times to find it closed. But will return to Bayham abbey soon as looking at these photos now know could do a lot better composition, the above is a little unbalanced, less about the tree more about the ruins.
5. Boscombe Pier Dorset
Another mover from 2 million views is Boscombe Pier on the Dorset coast. Having dropped from number 3 to number 5 on Google Maps with just shy of 115,000 views.
Good memories of Dorset and morning beach walks under Boscombe Pier. When not working, between contracts and not really living anywhere permanent. Of no fixed abode sounds ominous but works with landscape photography.
6. Pitstone Hill, Buckinghamshire
Another mover is Pitstone Hill on the Chitern Hills in Hertfordshire with just shy of 100,000 views. This photo of Pitstone hill has moved up from number 7 to number 6.
Was a very very hot day in June 2019 when visited Pitstone Hill. Back then was working in Hertfordshire and would escape to the Chiltern hills at the weekends.
7. KFC Camberley Surrey
A new entry at number 7 is the spectacular KFC in Camberley Surrey. With just over 91,000 views, who does not love a photo of a KFC in Camberley? Lots of people want to visit KFC but doubt very many take a photo, not unless their trying to clock up views on Google Maps 🙂 I kind of knew at the time this would prove popular.
Associated with that day was a dawn shoot at Holmbury Hill on the Surrey hills part of the North Downs. After which, very tired made my way to the Travelodge in Camberley and had to wait for my room to become available. So killed some time and some hunger in the Camberley KFC.
8. Studland Beach, Dorset
Another mover from 2 million views on Google maps is Studland beach Dorset down from 5 to 8 with just under 82,000 views.
Studland is a lovely area of the Dorset coastline and great for walking and exploring. I spent two episodes in Dorset about 3 months apiece. What I regret from those times is not getting out more for sunrise and sunset shoots around Dorset. This popular photo of Studland has sold quite a few copies on the stock photography sites too. A good memory from back in July 2017.
9. Great Yarmouth Beach
Another mover from 2 million views on Google Maps is Great Yarmouth Beach going up from number 10 to 9 with over 80,000 views.
Just memories of when working in Hertfordshire 2019. Bank holiday weekends would take a trip down to the east coast of England Norfolk and Suffolk. Places like Great Yarmouth are great for some street photography especially around blue hour when all the neon lights come on. But can be hard to exclude and include elements within the frame.
10. Downsview Guesthouse, Kent
A new entry at number 10 is the Downsview Guesthouse in Kent with over 78,000 views. Another snap with the mobile phone, more just documenting where and when I visited a location. No doubt very helpful for other people who may be considering visiting the same place.
Associated with that photo on google maps is a popular one of the Devils Kneading trough on the Wye aka Kent Downs. That was the purpose of staying at the guest house in Kent in July 2021 to get 3 attempts at photographing this beautiful peaceful area of Kent.
Google Maps Photos Summary
So there you have it the top 10 photos on Google Maps having clocked up over 5 million views. 4 new entries and 6 movers from 2 million views. Recently I have started to gain a few followers on Google maps which is good. Sometime back did begin to construct my photos landscape photography map on Google Maps. All in a vain attempt to get more traffic to this website. What I love about adding photos to google maps is just the documenting of my journeys and travels. To think in 10 years can still look back at all these locations and relive the memories. Shall return with another post on Google Map Photos when exceeded 10 million views.
