From Sousse in Tunisia arranged a taxi with the hotel to take me to my next stop. Three nights in a resort hotel on the coast of Hammamet.
Sousse to Hammamet
Its around 100Km from Sousse in Tunisia to Hammamet and the taxi was going to cost me around 300 Dinar as arranged by the hotel. The driver was cool though. If I wanted to do any day trips could organise through him. Not really have enough time for that though. If I returned to Tunisia would be more to explore the interior of the country rather than a beach break. Would fly into Tunis then make my way to Dougga then Douz the gateway to the Sahara.
Local SIM
Helped me setup my local sim card for calls. Lots of little shops in both Sousse and Hammamet where you can get a sim card, you need to show your passport. Think I paid 45 dinar for 25GB internet data and then another 10 Dinar for local calls. A lot of people speak basic English where the main languages are Arabic and some French.
Hammamet Sunrise
The first image taken at Hammamet in Tunisia was a sunrise beach walk on the second day. This was taken with the canon compact camera and is one of my favourites. Had more beautiful sunrises but lacking a fishing boat and strong focal point.
Hammamet Kasbah
After sunrise and breakfast in the hotel took a taxi into town, the Kasbah and the old medina of Hammamet.
One good thing about photographing from within the Fort is no other people about and getting above the rooftops. Its 8 Dinar for entry into the forts, open from 8AM to 6pm so should manage a sunset one evening.
Hammamet Medina
After a good look round the Kasbah headed into the old medina which is a maze of narrow alleyways and very photogenic mid morning.
Lots of tourist shops dotted around the medina and the shop keepers are very keen for you to enter. I just said later, not really interested in souvenirs, the travel photos are now my sovenirs.
Lots of very photogenic pastal coloured old doors throughout the medina that were catching the morning sunlight. This time of year in Tunisia late December and its very warm in the sunshine cool in the shade and night. Two layers is sufficient.
Lots of wild alley cats in Hammamet medina too, cute but the advice is not to try and handle them. But they can make a good focal point for a travel photograph.
Hammamet Beach Sunset
That same evening in Hammamet with a few high clouds passing over which was rare there was a blood red sunset. I was feeling lazy in my hotel room but rushed out with my compact camera only to find had left the battery in the charger. So missed the best of the colour.
Wished I had gone to the Kasbah this evening with the DLSR and tripod, plan was to go tomorrow my last evening in Hammamet and Tunisia.
Hammamet Kasbah Sunset
My last evening in Hammamet took a taxi back to the Kasbah next to the old medina a few hours before sunset. Initially checked out the medina but was now mostly in shadow, except for a palm tree in the center.
Entered the Kasbah and up onto the ramparts to watch the Tunisian sunset fall behind the Atlas mountains in the distance.
Two friends sat on the wall enjoying the sunset made a good subject with the background sunset sky. Further round the fortress found what was the best composition at the time. Colourful sky, Atlas mountains and the silhouette of a fishing boat in the bay below.
Had to be careful not to use too long a shutter speed here else the boat would have had motion blur as it bobbed in the sea. Beautiful evening. Went into town and lots of good restaurants to choose from for some authentic traditional Tunisian dishes.
Tunisian Sunrises
A few more sunrise beach walks before departing from Hammamet and Tunisia. Unfortunately the fishermen were not out to provide an anchor and focal point. But those beautiful north African sunrises were guaranteed.
Back at the hotel the palm trees and reflections in the swimming pool provided a good composition and sense of location.
Goodbye Hammamet Tunisia
A lovely time had in Hammamet and Tunisia, a fantastic winter sunshine break if travelling from the UK. Reget not going into the hinterland of Tunisia with the camera and photographing the landscape, the olive trees, the dryness, the ancient ruins. Not really have the time for that, this was more an adventure and to break me into the region.
Travel Photography
Always use to enjoy travel but got disillusioned by being away too long and no sense of purpose. Feel now am transitioning from hedonistic tourist to travel photography. The reason for travel now is a combination of hiking, exploration and photography with a few nights off 🙂 The camera is such a great way to interact with the world around you.
Another trip lined up beginning of February 2023.
