High and Over to Cuckmere Haven

It was good to be living near the south downs in east Sussex, I had lots of exploring and walking to do, lots of subject matter for landscape photography. I was returning to high and over to walk along the river to the coastal outlet of Cuckmere Haven.

Along the river Cuckmere

I first visited Cuckmere country park back in 2016 when I first started landscape photography, it really is a beautiful piece of countryside along this valley but later in the day is very popular with tourists and visitors from nearby Brighton and Eastbourne.

Starting out from high and over just above the white horse, heading south down towards Cuckmere Haven, Looking north east there are some spectacular views of the river and valley below, with Wilmington hill in the background.

The weather was pretty gentle to start with, but the forecast was for wind and rain later but I had calculated I would have finished my walk around Cuckmere by then.

On a calm morning using a polariser water makes a good subject as you can catch the reflection of the sky on the still surface.

Moody Cuckmere Haven

On reaching Cuckmere Haven the sky was turning a thicker grey and the wind was picking up, still I wanted to catch a moody landscape photo that included the faint sun, the shingle, the sea and the cliffs of the seven sisters in the background.

it required a long exposure to get some motion blur on the sea and the moving clouds above but not too much, a tripod was essential.  I not bother putting on a ND filter, but kept the polariser on which reduces light up to two stops and stopped down to F/22 in this situation.

I really dont like walking in the rain and its rare I ever get caught out.  But sure enough, thick rain clouds moved in and heavens opened up.  Time to head back along the river back up high and over to my car.  A good walk all the same.
