From my base near Woolacombe the seaside town of Ilfracombe was not far away and looked like an interesting walk and scout around.
Scouting around Ilfracombe
It was another cold winters day when I visited Ilfracombe and needed to wrap up warm. It’s an interesting little town on the north Devon coast with some stunning Victorian architecture, its most striking feature. I was more use to this type of urban landscape down in the south east. Coastal towns like Brighton and Hastings from where I started by road trip into Devon. They don’t make them like that anymore! I was careful to avoid including some more modern buildings like the theatre and a weatherspoons pub.
I had a good walk around although it was bitterly cold. I had gone back to just using my compact canon camera, which I do if scouting out an urban area or town. Iv found with my canon compact the inbuilt lens sweet spot seems to be around F/6.3 which is giving me sharp images from front to back, generally focusing on infinity unless there is a clear focal point somewhere else in the composition.
Not many people about mid-week when I was scouting about, but it is a resort town and no doubt busy in the warm summer months.
The local beach is not much to write home about though. If your feeling energetic you can walk the south west coastal path from Woolacombe to Lee Bay and then Ilfracombe.
Down by the harbour I found a nice pub to have a pint and later enjoyed some fish and chips before heading back. The locals seemed friendly and appreciative of my business. From the harbour during the summer you can take a boat to the nearby island of Lundy. Tomorrow looked like a better day with some sunshine at least in the morning and I would be heading to Exmoor. You can check out my ad hoc compositions I shot with my mobile around Ilfracombe here.
