A nice sunny Sunday morning in May and decided to drive west from my base in Bexhill to return to mount Caburn on the Lewes Downs in east Sussex.
Return to mount Caburn
Was nearly two years ago now I first ventured up mount Caburn which is popular with sky divers due to its height. On my last visit to mount Caburn I only visited the summit, this walk I wanted to explore the surrounding Lewes Downs.
There is free car parking in the nearby village of Glyde but no pub. I had worked out the walking route I would take via studying ordnance survey maps online.
This time of year would have liked to arrived earlier, but the sun was peeking through the clouds highlighting the blankets of buttercups highlighting the hill.
Across the way is Beddingham Hill and Firle also of the South Downs way. Detouring left from the footpath towards Lewes takes you too the summit of mount Caburn with spectacular views of the pocket of east Sussex
Mount caburn gets its name from an Iron age fort that used to be here. No wonder with views from miles around. This really is an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Over the Lewes Downs
Trying to use a wide angle lens with my current filter set is causing vignetting around the edges. I can only really shoot at around 24mm or do some serious cropping post processing. I am going to invest in the 100mm set of filters.
From the summit I rejoin the footpath and head over the Lewes downs for a few miles towards the outskirts of Lewes and the dreaded golf course. Im not a fan of golf least of all golf courses.
From the outskirts of Lewes I took the footpath back through the golfcourse for about a mile hoping preying not to get struck in the head by a stray golf ball.
Across the valley of which Lewes sits in the south downs continues all the way to Ditchling beacon which I visited over 2 years ago. But the stretch of the south downs before Ditchling includes mount Harry and I plan to visit sometime. But I have explored alot of east sussex now and the south downs I want to head east next and back into Kent.
Heading back across the Lewes downs back to the carpark at Glynde and I am exhausted. I stop off in the village store and buy some filtered coffee for back home, locally produced, supporting the local economy and all that. Well deserved pint of ale in a nearby pub on the drive back home.
