From my base in Newquay in Cornwall, on my second day decided on a road trip around the coast of Cornwall starting at Penzance and working my way around the Lands End.
Walk around the coast of Penzance
As usual with me not arrive in Penzance as early as I would have liked to maybe catch the colours of a sunrise. The weather was a lot better than the day before but still with some sharp showers, wind but also some sunshine.
Being in an urban built up area, I was relying more on my Canon compact camera and exposing for the highlights created by the low morning sun bursting through from behind the cloud cover.
Further along the coastal path around Penzance were some dramatic views of St Michaels Mount across the bay. With more time would have liked to have visited St Michaels mount and got in closer.
Like most English seaside towns, Penzance is a little neglected now by tourism. It has its own unique feature with the Jubilee pool now under renovation due to storm damage. On a hot summers day, Im sure its a great place to cool down and have a swim.
Penzance to Newlyn
Walking the complete stretch of the promenade you make your way into Newlyn with its own pier, and harbour and a thriving local fishing industry.
I not usually shoot into the sun, but liked the yellow tinge and silhouette of the pier and lighthouse and the spotlight on the sea. Making my way to Newlyn harbour and the light was changing rapidly every 5 minutes as the sun appeared and disappeared behind the fast moving clouds.
The small colourful boats in Newlyn harbour made a nice composition with low side lighting and reflections off the water. A few minutes later, thick cloud moved in and rained quite heavy.
Living in Penzance
I really enjoyed my morning walk around Penzance and stopped for a winter warmer Cornish pastie in Newlyn through the Warrens outlet. Penzance would be a good base for exploring the west end of Cornwall. I did enquire about renting a room in a hotel but they wanted a minimum of 3 months, which was a bit long for me. There is not much call for the kind of work I do in Cornwall. I knew after Xmas I would need to start looking for work again and attend interviews. Not an ideal place for job searching, but perfect for seascape photography and hiking. Back to the car now and next stop Porthcurno.
