September 2021 was the warmest on record. It is a shame because of work we miss the majority of the good weather. September and the days are getting shorter, not so early or late for a good sunrise or sunset. September is a transitional month from summer to autumn. What follows is a compilation of the best landscape photography during September 2021.
Woodingdean Sunflowers
The first landscape shoot of September was a sunflower sunset on the south downs near Woodingdean Brighton.
That September evening there was strong wind and to capture the sunflowers during sunset in all their glory was both compositionally and technically challenging. Looking at the horizon I should have used graduated filters over the sky rather than bracketing when there is a lot of motion within the frame.
September Dawn, Brighton West Pier
The following weekend decided to camp out near Woodingdean Brighton. One subject I wanted to photograph was the ruins of Brighton West Pier. Arrived pre dawn, very cloudy and moody skies no vibrant colours in the sky.
With dull lighting conditions, still had a great subject. Got creative with a long exposure and waiting for the right moment when the right wave was receding back over the shingle.
September Sunrise Holmbury Hill
Had to travel to west Surrey for work beginning of week, so joined it with a weekend away exploring the Surrey Hills. If not, would have never caught a dramatic September sunrise from Holmbury Hill.
The key to this sunrise photo was the sunburst which required stopping down to F16 and waiting for the right moment which only lasted a few seconds.
Devils Punch Bowl Sunset
Took my first visit to the Devils Punch Bowl on the Surrey Hills and quite impressive it all was. Lots to take in within a few hours but scouted the area and came away with a few good shots.
The first was some deep moss covered woodland down in the basin of the Devils Punch bowl. Later managed to get some handheld shots of a vibrant September sunset sky over the Devils Punch Bowl.
A nice shot to capture the end of September and the end of summer. Although nearly missed it due to thinking the best light was over. It aint over until its over.
End of September
September 2021 was predominantly about sunrise and sunset at the weekends. I will never get bored shooting landscapes during sunrise and sunset, this is when the light and land is at its most beautiful. Roll on October and those autumn colours, often accompanied by the first frosts.
