Had to take the week off over Christmas and fancied a change of scenery and some winter sunshine. So took a trip to Tunisia in North Africa. I began the holiday in Sousse.
Tunisian Christmas Break
Been a while since travelled abroad. In March 2022 spent a couple weeks in Gambia and then in April 2022 a long weekend in France. Was considering another road trip in England for Christmas but my gut feeling was the week could be a washout and it was!
Tunisia looked attractive for a winter sunshine break. Under 3 hour flight, pretty cheap and guaranteed sunshine not falling below 20C during the day. Was taking my camera but not really a photography holiday. Tunisia does have some great locations but I would not be in the country long enough to explore these. The plan was to spend a couple of days in Sousse then travel up the coast to Hammamet for the remainder.
Sousse Arrival
Arrived at Enfidha airport in Tunisia via Easyjet from Gatwick. Changed some money up in the airport then headed outside to the taxi rank. A taxi from Enfidha to Sousse was around 130 Dinar with an exchange rate of approx 3.65 to the pound. In Tunisia local taxis are very cheap but from city to city can be expensive. Generally the prices are fixed and you dont get scammed like other countries.
Was staying in an all inclusive in Sousse the Marhaba Beach hotel, half board. Worked out cheap and the food was very good. A good all round base to explore Sousse, although the comfort, the beer, food, warm sunshine and recliners can make it difficult to move much.
Ribat of Sousse
After relaxing by the beach, by the pool my first day in Sousse, my first trip was to the medina and Ribat or fort of Sousse. A local taxi journey from a hotel in Sousse to the medina will set you back about 8 Dinar.
The Ribat of Sousse was very impressive, kept in immaculate condition. I only took my compact camera, not wanting to draw attention to myself until I felt comfortable.
There is no denying there has been some horrific terrorist attacks in recent years within the borders of Tunisia that have targeted tourists. But this in no way reflects the Tunisian people who were all very friendly and welcoming. Sousse is very much an international city.
It was great exploring the Ribat and then the medina of Sousse, well worth a visit if you are in the city.
Sousse public beach
After visiting the ribat and medina took a wander along the beachfront of Sousse next to the city center. All very pleasant and lots of cafes for coffee and croissants.
Sousse Sunrise
From the hotel in Sousse did manage a sunrise shoot with both the compact and the DLSR setup on the travel tripod.
A good short stay in Sousse Tunisia, just two nights, plenty of winter sunshine. Next stop was further up the coast about 100Km Hammamet.
