One visit to the Suffolk coast was not enough. So come the end of May and another bank holiday I return to Suffolk for another long weekend of coastal walking, seascape and landscape photography.
Kirkley, Lowestoft
My main focus of this return visit to the Suffolk coast was the seaside town of Southwold, but could not find any suitable accommodation nearby within budget. So chose to stay in a nice hotel right on the coast in Kirkley Lowestoft.
It was a lovely late afternoon when I arrived in Kirkley Suffolk. Like a summers day and I went on a therapeutic beach walk just with my compact camera to get my bearings.
I have family history in this part of Suffolk, my dad grew up in Lowestoft during the war and I visited as a small child to see my Nan. They are all long gone now, but it was quite emotional experience to return after all this time.
Southwold Suffolk
An early start for the drive to Southwold from Kirkley in an attempt to catch a sunrise. Not a dramatic sunrise on the beach at Southwold and still just handholding my camera.
I think one of the most photographic subjects on the coast at Southwold are the colourful beach huts and the pier.
I completed my walk along the southwold seafront to gun hill and then along the sand dunes. Then inland along the river and through the marshes. Not so keen on this type of landscape, prefer hills and coast, preferably both.
Finally back to the seafront of Southwold and more of those beach huts. In the back of my mind I was time boxing and wanted to get back to my hotel for a big cooked breakfast, after all it was included in the price. But I had at least scouted Southwold, but would have liked to have spent more time there and explored the town and spent some time relaxing on the beach.
Covehithe Ruins
It was a cloudy overcast day when I left my base in Kirkley to visit the coast of Covehithe. I not attempt sunrise due to the cloud so left a little later. But the plan was to be back at the hotel before 10AM for a cooked breakfast, after along walk photographing ruined churches and seascapes along the Covehithe coast of Suffolk.
Like Dunwich on the Suffolk coast, Covehithe has seen better days and fallen victim to coastal erosion. I love photographing and exploring ruins so the first port of call was the church of St Andrews. I should have used tripod, I was handholding and bracketing my shots of the ruined church.
There was plenty of compositions walking along the beach with Southwold to the south clearly visible. With the fallen pill box on the Covehithe beach, the coastal erosion since WWII was obvious.
Suffolk Seeking Compositions
During my stay on the north Suffolk coast I did visit some other nearby places including Lowestoft old town, Ness Point, Englands most easterly point, nearby Gunton Dunes, Pakefield and Kessingland.
But not really get any great compositions from these places, just some snaps on my mobile. My last night in the hotel while eating my dinner, I noticed outside on the beach some brilliant light including a rainbow, and went out only with my mobile to take a look. On my last day in Suffolk I actually went inland and did a walk around Somerleyton but not get my DLSR out at all.
Another great bank holiday weekend on the Suffolk coast walking and seascapes photography. In hindsight maybe I enjoyed the creature comforts of the hotel too much. Next trip to the east coast of England will be Norfolk and maybe some self catering.
