Talaia de Son Jaumell

Cala Ratjada Photography Majorca

From Port De Pollenca in the north west of Majorca was next making my way to the east coast via Palma to Cala Ratjada.

Cala Ratjada Resort

After the all inclusive family hotel experience at Port De Pollenca was having my fill of holiday resorts. Was considering cancelling my 3 night reservation at Cala Ratjada and booking into the sanctuary at Lluc. Decided to stick with the original plan. Had booked this all up a few months in advance using the Rother Walking guide. Glad I stuck with the original plan but regret not having visiting Lluc on this trip.

Cala Agulla

Cala Ratjada is a pleasant resort popular with Germans. At least in Cala Ratjada was staying in an adult only hotel. The main walk here began at the sandy unspoilt beach of Cala Agulla.

Cala Agulla is a beautiful little sandy bay, quiet and peaceful out of season in February. Tried some panoramics hand holding but not come out well. Can tell from the dark blue patch in the sky used a polariser. Find this distracting, difficult to notice on the small screen out in the field but stands out like a sore thumb back home on the big screen. Should take with and without, this is best done by not removing the polariser, just turning it on and off. There were also some workmen to the right of the frame, an out of frame distraction.

Talaia de Son Jaumell

From Cala Agualla can see the tower on top of the hill Puig de Telegraf. Talaia de Son Jaumell was the next stop. Quite a hike up the hill but the views from the top of Talaia de son Jaumell are well worth the effort.

So many compositions up on the hill of Cala mesquida below and the Serra Llevant hill range extending inland. One of the most outstanding though was a pano that included the tower but unfortunately has excluded Cala Mesquida. Could have worked this composition better. Can visualise sunrise this time of year could be exceptional from here. That low morning light hitting the bay below and the tower, maybe catching some high clouds. Sitting on the hill enjoying the views I was glad I had not cancelled my visit to Cala Ratjada. This walk alone was well worth the trip.

Cala Mesquida

From the top of Talaia do son Jaumell hiked down to Cala Mesquida. Cala Mesquida is a beautiful sandy bay with sand dunes and minimal tourism development. Very quiet in low season but sure its gets a lot of visitors in high season.

After a long hike from Cala Ratjada was hoping there was a bar restaurant open down there as was now lunchtime and a cold beer would go down a treat. Did find one open and had one too many cold beers but what a lovely beach to have an afternoon nap on.

Cala Agulla Sunset

The walk back took you through the sand dunes, a forest then a return to Cala Agulla. The sun was now setting to the west and captured a better composition than the morning visit via a panaramic.

The setting sun is just out of the frame to the left else had problems with exposure and sun flare. A sunrise would work better here bathing the hills and the beach in low warm light.

Rother Walking Guide

A beautiful day out walking, have the rother walking guide to thank for this. For this walk alone glad I come to Cala Ratjada. The other walks in the area and along the east coast required a car to get to so would miss them. I did go out for a walk along the coast from Cala Ratjada the following day in the opposite direction from Cala Agulla but not get anything outstanding. If it had been anything good would likely be in the Rother guide.
