firle beacon sunrise misty may morning

Sunrise Mist from Firle Beacon on the South Downs

Sometimes an early start pays off even when the original plan fails. I had gone out before dawn looking for possible poppy fields, but from Firle Beacon the real photograph was happening in the opposite direction, as the sun rose through mist lying low across the East Sussex landscape.

Pre-Dawn Scouting on Firle Beacon

This photograph was taken during the late May heatwave, while I was scouting possible poppy field locations around the South Downs. I drove up towards Firle Beacon before sunrise to get a wider view of the surrounding landscape and see if any red poppy fields stood out from above.

I did not find the poppy fields I was looking for from that viewpoint, but the morning had other plans. Looking east, the sun was rising through a layer of haze and low mist, with the wooded ridges and fields fading into soft layers below.

Morning Mist Across the South Downs

Early morning mist can completely change a familiar landscape. From Firle Bostal, the view opened out across the lower ground, with the mist hugging the valleys and softening the trees, fields and distant ridgelines.

The orange sunrise gave the scene its colour, but the mist gave it depth. Without that low haze, this would have been a much flatter image. Instead, the landscape separated into layers, with each ridge becoming slightly paler as it moved towards the horizon.

Photographing the Sunrise Handheld

There was nothing complicated about the setup. I used aperture priority, wide open at f/5.6, with the 24–105mm lens zoomed in to 105mm. The minimum shutter speed was set to 1/125, with ISO 200, which was enough for handheld shooting without needing a tripod.

The main challenge was exposure. With the sun in the frame, the highlights were always going to be difficult to control. I exposed to protect the brighter parts of the scene, though the sun itself was still slightly blown out. In post-processing, I was able to blend it back into the surrounding colour so it sat more naturally within the image.

Worth the Early Start

This is one of the reasons it is worth getting out before dawn, especially during settled warm weather. You may set off with one subject in mind and come back with something completely different.

I went looking for poppy fields, but the best photograph of the morning was this classic South Downs sunrise, with mist across the landscape and the sun lifting through the haze. It was a reminder that scouting trips are never wasted if you are already out in the right light.
