An unusual two-storey Second World War pillbox at Udiam, near Robertsbridge in East Sussex. Constructed during Britain’s preparations against a possible German invasion in 1940, this distinctive fortification stands beside the B2244, close to the River Rother. Unlike conventional single-storey pillboxes, its elevated design incorporates firing positions at different levels, allowing defenders to cover the surrounding road and lower ground. The structure illustrates how military engineers adapted defensive positions to suit local terrain and strategic requirements.
