What follows is a summary of locations visited and the best landscape photography during January 2023.
Wilmington to Alfriston
The first good hike and landscape photography was a sunny refreshing January walk up Wilmington and Windover hill and round to Alfristion with fantastic views all round. This walk was such a contrast to the beach scapes of Tunisia and felt good to be back in the south downs and East Sussex.
There was fantastic cumulus clouds that day that casted incredible sun spots and shadows on the landscape below. Want to do a misty morning sunrise shoot from this location sometime in the future.
Seaford Seascapes
A wet windy January weekend and needed to get outdoors with the camera and stretch the legs. Seascapes make good subjects in stormy weather especially with a strong subject like Newhaven lighthouse. The plan this day though was to shoot Newhaven lighthouse from along the beachfront of Seaford, looking west, rather than from Newhaven west beach looking east.
Physically the closest you can get to Newhaven lighthouse is along the east beach pier, then using the 400mm lens to fill the frame with crashing waves.
Newhaven lighthouse low tide
Another blustery January weekend saw a return to Newhaven lighthouse to photograph it from the west beach low tide.
Arrived too late for the best of the sunrise light. Had problems separating Newhaven lighthouse from its background when moving west along the beach at low tide. You need spotlighting to achieve this. Going to take a few more early morning visits to get the best out of this location.
Winchelsea Strand
A sunny January afternoon with good visibility saw me make a return to Winchelsea on the high weald in East Sussex. Wanted to check out the views from the Strand gate viewing platform in Winchelsea.
Good views of Camber Castle with little Cheyne windfarm rising in the background. Also views of the coast, the Mary Stanford boathouse memorial and Dungeness power station. There is a lot to photograph within Winchelsea.
Beddingham Church South Downs
Sometimes really want to get out but racking my brains for an inspiring location to visit. This can become an issue when remaining in your local area. Then the night before Beddingham church near Lewes in East Sussex sprang to mind.
Due to private land not capture the visualisation had in mind of the church bathed in morning sunlight with mount caburn in shadow rising behind. But enjoyed the views on a beautiful frosty sunny January morning from a hike up Beddingham Hill on the south downs.
Seven Sisters Country Park
Another possible composition had seen from the road was one of the Cuckmere river leading down to Cuckmere Haven within the Seven Sisters country park. So the last weekend of January headed to the Seven Sisters country park to capture this visualisation.
Another possible composition given my visit coincided with peak low tide was a closeup of the Seven sisters cliff face from the beach at Cuckmere Haven.
Good winter light throughout the morning although missed the best of it due to getting up late without a clear location to visit.
Camber Sands Wreck
The last photo walk of January 2023 was a very cold overcast day, little wind no good light. Chose to walk from Broomhill sands to Camber sands and maybe check out any new compositions with the sand dunes of Camber. Arrived a few hours before low tide and noticed the old ship wreck protruding from the sea.
This ship wreck at Camber could work really well low tide with some good sunset light, dramatic sunrise sky and long exposures. Another location to return too given the right conditions.
Good walk along the beach, but little to photograph given my mindset. What you could have shot on days like this is high key images with a strong silhouette. There were small groups of horse riders which would have made a good subject within the negative space.
End of January
January 2023 had been a very cold month, many frosty mornings but no snow at least in the southeast corner of England. Some good trips out with the camera around East Sussex. Roll on February and springtime.
