November 2022 Landscape Photography Review

November 2022 started well with a road trip through the Isle of Wight during stormy and dramatic conditions. Remainder was spent mostly on the south downs and high weald in east Sussex. What follows is a summary of locations visited and the best landscape photography during November 2022.

Isle of Wight Road Trip

November 2022 started with a road trip on the Isle of Wight in south east England. Been meaning to visit the Isle of Wight for hiking and landscape photography for a few years now so finally got round to it.

A great trip through the Isle of Wight which coincided with some stormy weather but in which there was lots of breaks in the clouds rendering some great lighting, rainbows etc.

Pea Down East Dean South Downs

Made a return to the south downs near East Dean to scout out a location known as Pea Down. Had some good morning light with the sun popping behind large cumulous clouds painting shadows and light pools on the south downs expanse.

Within the wide expanse of empty landscape that is common in the hills of the south downs a lone tree provides a focal point and anchor.

Hooe Church, East Sussex

Had a contact through this website if had any photographs of Hooe in East Sussex. I knew of Hooe had studied it on OS Maps and wanted to do a walk and scout around the location. On the return trip from East Dean decided to stop off at Hooe Church and have a look around.

Some pleasant countryside around Hooe, the church provided a strong subject and a good place to start the scout. Unfortunately the best of the light had faded from earlier in the morning. I noticed around the area of Hooe there is quite a few holiday homes.

Brede High Woods Misty Morning

One early morning it was very foggy and misty being November the autumn colours were in their peak. Decided to visit nearby Brede High Wood to observe it in Autumn. Returned to the same location had shot some bluebells during springtime. Now in order to find this precise location used google photos that you can then open in google maps giving precise location to where previous photos were taken.

Think the location looks better in springtime. Woodland photography is hard so chaotic. Although thick fog and mist at dawn it cleared quickly even without the sun. This is not what I envisioned, you dont win them all. Wanted streaming light coming in through the side with morning mist and golden foliage. Still on my bucket list.

Beckley Woods Waterfall

Another woodland wanted to check out during autumn was a return visit to Beckley woods on the high weald in East Sussex. Previous trips to Beckley wood had scouted out the location of the Beckley woods waterfall. With recent rainfall thought the waterfall might be flowing.

The Beckley woods waterfall was not flowing, dont think it ever does. Maybe nearby farms have diverted its source. Still it is a very peaceful location, not a sound deep in Beckley woods.

South Downs Brighton

Scouted out a few new locations around Brighton on the south downs and revisited one or two old ones. What started out as a very cloudy overcast day later began to break up providing some great light.

The highlight of the trip into Brighton were the views of the south downs looking east from along Falmer road.

Autumn High Weald

With the last days of autumn wanted to capture a scene from the high weald in east Sussex. Had a visualisation in mind but no specific composition. That was basically autumn woodland being saturated by a setting sun.

The weather forecast looked good for late November and scouted out a few locations that day including Salehurst and Bodiam but settled on an autumn composition I happened upon near Mountfield on the high weald.

Brightling High Weald Woodland

The last weekend of November and those autumn high weald woodland colours are still vibrant. Because the autumn woodland is still very much alive come the end of November decided to make a return to where I finished the previous weekend on the high weald near Brightling.

Was following some footpaths marked out on OS Maps that took me into Hunters farm with a good birds eye view of Darwell Reservoir surrounded by autumn high weald woodland. Took a shot from the lane into the farm with the 200mm lens. Hoping for better further along but the footpath is no more. Told to go around. Not really sure if this is the case or rather the owner would rather walkers not enter ‘their’ land. Long walk that day and further along found some more typical high weald autumn woodland to photograph with the 24-70mm

Some beautiful woodland scenery here, but again had to wait patiently for the light to pop out from behind the clouds. Maybe should have spent more time and shot a pano.

End of November

November is typically a dank month, cold, wet, foggy and overcast. November 2022 had some of that but not too much. Those deep autumn hues lasted well into the end of the month. Visited many new locations throughout November both local and far, Roll on December and winter.
