The Willingford Stream runs quietly through Dallington Forest and along the slopes of Brightling Down, but after prolonged rainfall it becomes one of the more rewarding winter locations on the High Weald. December’s cold, wet and overcast weather wasn’t ideal for wide landscapes, but it was perfect for returning to woodland streams and seasonal waterfalls.
This visit followed weeks of steady rain. In drier months the Willingford Stream is easy to overlook, but when water levels rise a series of small waterfalls and cascades begin to appear along its course.

The short video below shows several of these waterfalls as they flow through Dallington Forest and Brightling Down during winter conditions.

Exploring the Willingford Stream
There are a number of small waterfalls scattered along this stretch of stream, but they’re not obvious from the main paths. Most require leaving the trail and carefully working down steep, muddy banks where the ground can be slippery, especially in winter. This isn’t a casual walk and rewards slower, deliberate exploration.

None of the waterfalls here are large or dramatic on their own. Instead, it’s the sequence of small drops, shallow pools and flowing rock shelves that works best in subdued light. Overcast conditions help keep contrast under control, while consistent water flow gives shape and movement to the scene.
Photography Notes
Winter conditions make preparation important. Wellington boots are strongly recommended, as paths and stream edges are often saturated. A tripod is essential for controlling shutter speed, and a polarising filter helps reduce reflections on wet rock and flowing water. Cold, damp air can also cause lenses to steam up, so patience is part of the process.

This is a location that only really delivers after sustained rain. Time it wrong and there’s very little to see; time it right and the Willingford Stream becomes a quiet but rewarding winter subject.
