Walking and Hiking on the South Downs

Crane Down Folkington Hill East Sussex

The forecast was a cloudy Saturday morning but needed to get out for a good walk and not too far away.  My initial plan was a walk from Wilmington over Crane Down and then onto Friston forest.

Wolstonbury Hill South Downs West Sussex

While ascending Ditchling beacon on the south downs I noticed the outline of Wolstonbury hill on the border in West Sussex.  I knew then I would return to walk to its summit and take some landscape photographs from there.

Full Moon Ditchling South Downs

It was that time of the month when the moon would rise on the south east horizon close to the sun setting in the north west, at  least over the weekend.  I would head back to the south downs for an evening walk to capture the moon and the sun but where?

Castle Hill South Downs Hyperfocal

Living and working in east Sussex I have now covered most of the south downs between Eastbourne and Brighton.  I had one area left to scout the far side of the Castle Hill nature reserve near Woodingdean.

Scouting South Downs Kingston near Lewes

Another hot weekend here in east Sussex, too hot to be out in the midday sun.  The plan was to do an evening walk along a part of the South Downs I have not been yet.  Another escarpment the other side of the river Ouse that continues to Brighton.  Due to football I not make the evening walk so Sunday morning I went on a scouting trip along the South Downs starting off in Kingston near Lewes.

Willingdon Hill Sunset Moonrise South Downs

I had sacrificed photographing  a Strawberry moon rising just as the sun was setting for the world cup football, England v Belgium.  The game was basically meaningless as both sides put on only their B teams.  So the next evening from Willingdon hill on the South downs I  intended to capture a sunset and then the moon rising over Eastbourne.

Wilmington Hill Sunset East Sussex

A hot weekend in mid June and I had mostly been stuck indoors.  I not fancy doing my usual walks in the morning so headed out Sunday evening to catch a sunset from Wilmington Hill in east Sussex.

Lewes to Blackcap South Downs East Sussex

While researching Mount Caburn and the Lewes Downs a few weeks back I noticed on the other side of Lewes the South Downs continued with interesting peaks like Mount Harry and Blackcap leading on to Ditchling Beacon which I have visited before.

Mount Caburn Lewes Downs East Sussex

South Downs Sunset East Sussex

I was keen to get more experience with my new DLSR, we were having a very hot weekend in May here in east Sussex.  The hottest day on records and the daytime was too hot and bright for a hike.  So I decided to head to the Firle on the south downs late afternoon to practice some landscape photography and try and get a sunset over the South downs. From Firle along the River Ouse

Studying OS maps online I was keen to walk and take landscape photographs of areas of the south downs that I had not visited yet living in east Sussex.  Today would be a morning start over Firle Beacon and Itford Hill and then down along the river Ouse towards Lewes.
