Jevington Church and Firle Beacon from Willingdon Hill

A morning walk from Butts Brow over Willingdon Hill opened up a new view across the South Downs, looking towards Jevington Church with Firle Beacon rising behind it. It is one of those compositions that only appears when you take a slightly different path from the usual route.

A New View from Willingdon Hill

This photograph was taken from high up on Willingdon Hill, looking across the valley towards Jevington. The church sits tucked among the trees, while Firle Beacon rises in the distance, giving the scene a strong layered effect.

Although it almost has the feel of a drone shot, the image was taken from the ground using a long lens. The compression at around 330mm brings the church, the village, the trees and the Downs closer together, making Firle Beacon feel much nearer than it really is.

Photographing Jevington from Above

The light was not ideal. The morning was hazy and fairly harsh, which reduced the contrast and softened some of the distant detail. Even so, the composition itself has real potential.

This is the kind of viewpoint worth returning to in better conditions — perhaps with clearer air after rain, lower evening light, or early morning light catching the slopes and the church more gently. Autumn evening golden hour would also be worth returning for. The basic structure of the image works: village foreground, church anchor, rolling downland behind, and Firle Beacon closing the frame.

Why Taking New Footpaths Matters

The most useful part of this walk was not just the photograph, but the reminder. Even in familiar areas like Butts Brow, Willingdon Hill and the South Downs above Eastbourne, a new footpath can completely change the way the landscape lines up.

Landscape photography often comes from revisiting places, but it also comes from small route changes. One path to the left, one different descent, one higher viewpoint, and a composition that was hidden before suddenly appears.

This view across Jevington towards Firle Beacon is now one to return to when the light is better.
