Majorca Travel Photography Review

Early February 2022 took a 2 week break to the Balearic island of Majorca. What follows is a compilation of locations visited throughout Majorca and the best walks and travel photography.

Why Majorca?

Never been to the Balearic islands and only a 2 hour flight away. Given the time of year the climate is moderate with an average of 15c ideal for walking. Rother have a walking guide for Majorca and it looked very good on paper. So using the Rother walking guide booked up various accommodation around the island where there were some good walking and landscape scenery opportunities.

Palma Majorca

Flew into Palma Majorca from Gatwick London with EasyJet. Will always fly EasyJet if available as speedy boarding and seats up front ensure I get two bags on. Would be spending one night in Palma before moving onto the next location. From a city center hotel the most obvious subject in Palma is the cathedral.

Had some good light that afternoon in Palma. With good light the cathedral is magnificent. From Palma would take buses around the island to more remote locations around Majorca. Ideally you would hire a car. Many of the walks in Rother guide are only accessible by car.

Sant Elm

From Palma made my way to Sant Elm on the south west coast of Majorca. Was staying in a seafront apartment in Sant Elm and this was a good move. An apartment gives you a lot more flexibility in terms of meal times and saves a lot of money on food and drink.

There are two great walks from Sant Elm with one to La Trapa over the Tramuntana and the other to Port De Andraxt. A taxi to or from port Andraxt is 10 euros. Being low season and Sant Elm small and quiet there was very little open.

Port De Soller

From Sant Elm made my way to Port De Soller in central Tramuntana. To get around Majorca by bus most locations will require you first returning to Palma to change buses. Most bus trips were in the range of 5 to 10 euros a journey. After two days solid walking I saw these trips on the buses as resting my legs. Port De Soller is known as the walkers capital on Majorca.

Some fantastic walks can take directly from the seafront at Port De Soller. The best was to Deia up in the Tramuntana. These walks are one way and will need to take a bus back to Port De Soller.

Port De Pollenca

From Port De Soller made my way to Port De Pollenca in the north west Tramuntana. Made a mistake of booking up an all inclusive family hotel during half term holidays. If a solo traveller keen on peace and quiet be aware of this. Port De Pollenca has a very photogenic seafront.

There are a couple of good walks from Port De Pollenca. One being through the Boquer valley and another being Puig De Maria that requires a small bus journey into the town of Pollenca. Again would have had a lot more options given had hired a car.

Cala Ratjada Majorca

From Port De Pollenca made my way to the next destination of Cala Ratjada on the east coast and within the Serra Llevant hills. Some lovely undeveloped sandy bays at Cala Agulla and Cala Mesquida which are both visited by a magnificent walk from Cala Ratjada.

Without a car there was not much else to visit in the immediate area of Cala Ratjada. There are walks along the coast but if not listed in the Rother walking guide of Majorca they will likely not compete with those that are in it.

S’Arenal Palma

Finally back to Palma and one night in the concrete coast resort of S’Arenal. Like to check these places out and got me close to the airport for the flight home the next day.

A nice sunset in S’Arenal to end this wonderful walking photography trip around Majorca.

Majorca Summary

Get the Rother Walking guide for Majorca.

Hire a car. The buses are good for getting to each major location. But many of the best walks require a car. I wish you could book a few lessons to train you to drive on the ‘right’ side of the road with an English speaking instructor.

Rent an apartment rather than a hotel. Save a lot of money on restaurants and flexible when you want to eat.

For low season I think April would be better and should be in full bloom.

Had a few days of very cool weather out of the ordinary take the right clothing.
